Removing, Repairing, And Restoring Kool Aid Stains On Carpet

Why Kool-Aid Stains Are Difficult to Remove

They main ingredient in Kool-Aid that makes it hard to get rid of is dye. The chemical structure of the dye makes it bond to most types of carpet. This bond can be hard to remove unless you have some special techniques.

There are two main things you need in order to win the right against removing stubborn Kool-Aid stains. These two things are

2. Chemical Treatment

These two things must work in conjunction with one another in order to get the unsightly stain out of the carpet once and for all.

How it Works

First, the heat will break the bond the dye has with the carpet fibers. Second, the chemical treatment will further separate the dye so it can be removed. The real trick is to use a stain removal technique that will not harm your carpet. Here is an idea you can use.

The number one thing to do is look at how recently the stain occured. If it recent, use a paper towel to get as much of it up as you can. This can help to remove some of the stain but will not completely do the trick.

Next, you will want to get a special chemical treatment product that will be applied to the affected area. Once the treatment is on the stain you will want to get a cloth towel, put some warm water on it, and try to get some more of the dye out.

This next step should be used with caution. If you have a type of carpet that you know would be adversely affected, then be very careful.

You can use a steam iron on a medium-medium high setting. You will turn on the iron and press it down on the dampened towel ON TOP of the Kool-Aid stain. This is where the heat comes from that helps to break apart the dye molecules in the carpet. The steam will help to make the dye particles come out of the carpet and bond to the damp towel. You will want to closely monitor the process and make sure the carpet is not being burned.

The more dye you see in the damp towel the more the stain is being removed. You can simple repeat this process a few times while applying additional coatings of the chemical treatment.

This is much simpler than you may have thought, but it can be a very effective tactic for getting rid of Kool-Aid stains on a carpet. Just be sure that you do not leave the steam iron on the carpet for an extended period of time. Most types of carpet can withstand this type of heat without damage, but some of the older materials may not fare so well. Monitor the carpet closely and you should have no problems.

This is not the only way to remove carpet Kool-Aid stains, but it is a popular and cheap way to get the job done. If the stain is on some kind of area rug that is Oriental, Persian, braided, Afghan, etc., then be sure to contact the vendor you got the rug from to see if they have any specific recommendations.
